Zhenghe, in the Nanping prefecture of northern Fujian, is one of the homes of Chinese white tea, with production dating to the 18th century. Sandwiched between the Wuyi and Jiufeng ranges, it is higher, cooler and mistier than coastal Fuding, with colder winters that slow the bushes and deepen flavour.

Zhenghe favours natural indoor withering, and its later-budding Zhenghe Da Bai cultivar yields a white tea that is fuller-bodied, warmer and more apricot-and-honey than the lighter, brighter Fuding style — the classic Fuding-versus-Zhenghe contrast. From 1874 the county also adopted gongfu black-tea making, and Zhenghe Gongfu red tea remains a regional specialty.
