Fenghuang (Phoenix Mountain)
Single-bush oolongs that mimic flower and fruit aromas — orchid, honey-orchid, almond.
Fenghuang (Phoenix) Mountain in Chaozhou, Guangdong, is one of China's great oolong terroirs — misty, mineral-rich and rocky, with more than 3,000 ancient tea trees, many 200 to 400 years old, on the slopes below the main peaks. Tea has been farmed here since the Song dynasty and was sent as tribute tea by the Ming.
The hallmark is Dancong — "single bush" — tea: the best trees are harvested and processed individually, and outstanding individuals are propagated as named aroma types such as Mi Lan Xiang (honey-orchid), Ya Shi Xiang and Huang Zhi Xiang. From the Fenghuang Shuixian cultivar group plus skilled roasting, the teas naturally mimic specific flowers and fruits, and old-tree high-mountain Dancong is among the most collectable oolongs.
